Shambhala Centre Membership

"The premise of Shambhala vision is that, in order to establish an enlightened society for others, we need to discover what inherently we have to offer the world. So, to begin with, we should make an effort to examine our own experience, in order to see what it contains that is of value in helping ourselves and others to uplift their existence."

Chögyam Trungpa, Rinpoche from Shambhala: The Sacred Path of the Warrior

Everyone is invited to become a member of the Vancouver Shambhala Centre.

Becoming a member of our Centre is, at the same time, becoming a member of Shambhala, a global community committed to cultivating mindfulness, awareness and compassion—personally and in society.

Membership is a way to express appreciation for what Shambhala provides and help make it available to others. This involves supporting Shambhala in three main ways:

  1. Practicing mindfulness-awareness meditation. This is the best way for members to support Shambhala, our world, and ourselves.
  2. Volunteering. All of the work of our Centre and much of the work of the the larger Shambhala community is done by volunteers. Giving our time and talents to the work of the community is a vital form of support and viewed as part of members' practice.
  3. Providing financial support. Financial Support: Shambhala is sustained through the generosity of others. We rely on membership dues to pay our basic operating expenses and view financial giving as part of our practice as well. When one becomes a member through a local Centre, one’s financial contributions support the needs of the local Centre. This includes helping support and strengthen the international Shambhala community. A portion of our centre’s donations are shared with Shambhala International. Suggested Vancouver Shambhala Centre dues are $60 per month. Dues can be tailored to one’s individual financial situation. The local Shambhala Centre will ensure that anyone who wants to be a member can afford to do so.

While membership is primarily an expression of appreciation, it brings several benefits. These include:

  • Join our community! There are currently over 90 members who share a connection to mindfulness-awareness meditation and aspire to create a wakeful & joyful society.
  • Receiving ongoing practice and study guidance, encouragement and support
  • Ability to practice at the Vancouver Shambhala Centre any time of day.
  • An ongoing relationship with a Meditation Instructor who can:

    • Instruct on working with obstacles to meditation
    • Guide your path of practice and study
    • Guide you in joining meditation and daily life
  • Having opportunities to staff programs and receive related training
  • Being eligible to participate in the Centre’s governance
