Envisioning Questions for Community Members

Ty Runkle

Vision for the centre

  • What are we missing?
    What do we need?

Ty’s dream:

Urban setting w/ apartments, courtyard, Commercial space. More of a community. Possibly a store front were community may have there business there. The idea of this new center as being open and available more often, 7 evenings a week with more of a happening atmosphere. More of the art, calligraphy, mixon and cultural activities which support our place in the community. The idea of the street retreat ie Lisa Hill.

What are some of the non-negotiables we need?

  • Bigger shrine room
  • Zoning conformity
  • Bigger better kitchen
  • Bathroom improvements
  • Better interview facility
  • storage

Be able to run one big and one small program simultaneously. Need more small rooms(3) for interview, meeting rooms.

Kitchen and bathroom requirements. The bathroom should have more than one toilet. Kitchen should be larger w/ more counter space. Better dish and food facility. Sterilizer and drying rack. Better setup for garbage and recycling. Storage.

Library, business office, meaning office equipment able to support needs. A separate meeting office, which could be a meeting room as well.

Overall storage room for mops vacuums.
Storage area or cabinets for shrine supplies. Ikebana needs storage.

A large shrine room 2x as big as we have.
A small shrine room the size of the current large shrine room or approx three quarters

Cloak room, by the door needs to be bigger.

Physical Space

  • Location:

Ideally close to current shambhala center. Close to rapid transit. Within 3 blocks ideally and 7 blocks max. Bus lines consider how often they run. Bus lines w/in 3 blocks.

Between oak(west) & imperial(east) north(1st ave. Or the water) south(fraser river)

Safe area. Parking should fit in w/ zoning. In other words holding ourselves out as a church we need to conform to assembly zoning requirements. If we need parking evenings and weekends this may be an easier sell to van council as to our abiding by the rules of parking.

Location could be in a commercial or residential area. The area should have good mojo. Trees and esthetics.

Moving Forward

  • Decision making:

Needs to be heavy involvement from community and come from the community. This will evolve and emerge.

Trust small committees to look at possibilities and our needs and to eventually make recommendation and decisions to our needs.

Then the community meeting would be invited to meeting and the direction laid out and final voice from community heard and then endorsement by the community.

  • Finances:

Could we dip into our savings? Yes. Some money is earmarked for thew building fund around $70,000. Some money was Dzongzar donation not earmarked and other center surplus moneys not earmarked for building fund. Council agreed that Dzongzars money does not have to be earmarked for building fund.

Phone list is the members and maybe friends. I need to find that out. Talk to Geoff and/or Paul.

Why did people leave, what did we not give them. What became of Greg.

  • Leadership:

Young people have been assuming leadership roles we have gained a different perspective and a different energy.

How do we encourage this to continue? It’s going fine and it will gather its own momentum.

Most people coming to open houses are younger and relating to their peers is easier.

Depth of people doing different jobs and duties is more abundant. IE more mi’s, directors, speakers.
