Envisioning Questions for Community Members

Personal Connection

  • What are your personal needs in this community? This could be practice needs. Social needs. Intellectual needs. Shambhala arts?

I like the social aspect of the sangha. I love the teachings and these are my primary need. I like the opportunity to contribute and help out with levels and areas within the center.

Vision for the Centre

  • What do we do well at our center? Courses, med. Instruction, etc

So many things! A great job of welcoming new people and creating a welcoming environment. We post available information on our bulletin boards. I like the frequency of programing. There is something happening just about every night these days, you could practically live here. We are bringing people along and providing opportunity for growth EX. new people moving into teaching roles.

  • What do we not do well at our center?

We should be more clear and accommodating w/ our generosity policy.

  • What is our responsibility to the greater Vancouver Community?

Continue to be accessible to the community.

Physical Space

  • How big a center? Imagine how many rooms and what they will be used for?

We are busting at the seams at this point. I like practicing with a group rather than an assembly. The kitchen space needs to be able to facilitate what we need, countertop space, prep space, storage space, an oven and stove, and an industrial dish washer. We need adequate storage for all our program and center supplies. Tables and other things need a storage area.

Main shrine room w/ high ceilings. Multiple rooms for multiple purposes.

  • Do you see us having store front OR higher?

Higher up does deal w/ street noise better.

  • Location

The same area is good. I like the center in a neighborhood instead of an industrial environment. Must be near transit.

  • Transportation

For bus transportation w/in 2-3 blocks. Within a few blocks of transit, transit shold be accessible.

  • What about our Curriculum? Are we lacking in an area(s)?

It would be good to have the space and ability to run more than one course at a time and the ability to have more than one heart of warriorship - sacred path course going on in the same year. Right now we have so much going on and it feels really vibrant.

How do we make decisions about moving? In other words there will be many decisions to be made in this process, How do we go about our decision making?

Council could make the decision. Is the next step members or anybody that comes to an open house. I recognize that the more people involved the more difficult it is.

I have an underlying sense that the majority be considered. It is good to gather comments from a large group of people and base our decisions on what we hear.

Moving Forward

  • Should we buy OR build or rent? Why?

Whatever of these makes sense from a financial and timing point of view.

  • How would you like to be involved in this relocation process?

I will make myself available for duties that come up. I am happy to spend time on purchasing and organizing the set up of the new space.
