Awake in Action is the social action arm of the Vancouver Shambhala Centre, is a community-based group interested in exploring where and how we may step into engagement with our world. We are motivated by the Shambhala Buddhist teachings of enlightened society and of being an active part in creating that society, by bringing our insights from the meditation cushion into the world of personal relationships, community service and work. The group engages the Shambhala world of enlightened warriorship and the Buddhist world of bodhisattva action while being open to other spiritual and contemplative traditions.
Some activities and actions include street retreats, prison outreach, dharma bakes in the DTES (downtown east side) and an e-newsletter. Awake in Action invites and hosts guest speakers and dharma teachers to speak and teach on engagement within the container of practice. By engaging with the world our intention is to develop a deeper and more open relationship with the world (reality) and to create connections, relationships and community.
Awake in Action no longer has regular monthly meetings, although other activities continue.
